IBA Team: 2nd in European Finals

A team from the MSc Petroleum Geoscience course were selected to represent the University in this year’s AAPG Imperial Barrel Competition. In this global competition, University teams analyse a dataset provided from the Oil/Gas industry, spending 8 weeks of their own time to interpret and assess the data for petroleum exploration, before showcasing their findings in a technical presentation to a panel of industry experts, including representatives Shell, Exxon, Total, Saudi Aramco and Nexen. The RHUL team competed in the European Finals that took place over a weekend in Prague, competing against 18 teams in total; Moscow, Amsterdam, Budapest, Paris, Dublin and many more.

Impressing the judges by the work that had been carried out in the 8 weeks provided, the RHUL team earned 2nd place in the European finals, narrowly missing out on the opportunity to go to Texas to present in the AAPG World Finals. Although disappointed to come so close to a funded trip to the USA, on reflection the team thoroughly enjoyed their experience, the students having the chance to use state of the art technology on a real dataset, receive great feedback from the industry panel, network with potential employers, and win cash award of $2,500 for the University.
